The Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Minister for Social Justice and Equality, Sioned Williams MS, has committed to delivering children’s rights in practice. ‘Committing to making children’s rights real in everyday life across Wales’ is a central part of the new government’s national priorities.

The update from the new government came three years from when the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child published its 2023 Concluding Observations Report on the UK. Responding to the observations, the Welsh Government’s commitment to strengething the protection of children’s rights includes:

  • delivering an universal childcare offer for all children aged nine months to four years old
  • delivering a new child poverty strategy so children have a standard of living that meets their physical, mental and social needs
  • focusing on prevention, early intervention and reducing inequalities in the health system
  • developing a more integrated system to tackle the issues that impact mental health and wellbeing
  • raising standards in education to ensure the best conditions for teaching and learning.

The Deputy First Minister said:

‘The new Welsh Government has put babies, children, and young people at the centre of our national priorities, committing to making children’s rights real in everyday life across Wales … We are building a fairer Wales where children’s rights are understood, respected and realised in everyday life.’
