Research by Fields in Trust (FIT) has revealed one in three children in Great Britain aged under nine years-old does not have a playground near their home. Findings also show that over 411,000 people in Wales do not live within a 10-minute walk of a green space.
The results are part of FIT’s Green Space Index – an annual barometer of publicly accessible park and green space provision across Britain.
Announcing the findings, FIT said:
‘The findings point to a worrying trend: deprivation increases the risk of losing green and recreational spaces that are so essential to community health, social cohesion and environmental resilience. Tackling this inequality must be prioritised in planning policies moving forward. This will help to ensure that every community has equitable access to the benefits of sport, play and nature.’
