Opening streets for play

Author: Play Wales
Date: March 2019

This toolkit is for local authorities in Wales and their partners. It will also be useful for housing associations, school communities, community workers and local residents.

It provides clear and concise information about closing streets to traffic so that children can play. It contains information intended to help people understand and address issues of concern. It also provides practical, step-by-step tools and templates that will support street play.

The toolkit aims to help local authorities develop policies and procedures that will enable resident-led street play projects in their areas. It will also help housing associations, school communities, community workers and local residents understand the opportunities and challenges.

To develop this toolkit, we worked with Playing Out, the organisation that supports street play throughout the UK. The toolkit and accompanying resources were informed by the Cardiff Street Play Pilot Programme and the UK-wide street play movement, and they refer to Playing Out’s Toolkit for Local Authorities.
