Developing and managing play spaces

Author: Play Wales
Date: April 2021

This toolkit has been designed for anyone who is responsible for managing or developing a community play space. This includes those who are part of a community council, local play association or residents group.

It aims to provide a single source of support to help community groups navigate some of the challenges of managing or developing a play space. The toolkit provides clear and concise information, as well as step-by-step guides and templates. It covers two main themes:

  • Design – focusing on the design of new play spaces, including topics such as participation, procurement, design and risk management (often referred to as ‘health and safety’)
  • Management – focusing on how to manage an existing or newly built play space, including topics such as maintenance and inspection, risk management and insurance.

We worked with Ludicology to review and update this fourth edition of the toolkit.
