Championing children’s play: a manifesto for Wales

Author: Play Wales
Date: July 2025

Play Wales’ manifesto for the next government in Wales was published prior to the Senedd election taking place in May 2026.

In the manifesto, Play Wales calls for the next government in Wales to continue its longstanding commitment to prioritising play. We ask all political parties to carry on supporting the implementation of the statutory Play Sufficiency Duty.

We urge the government to make cross-policy commitments to ensure that children’s opportunities to play increase and improve. Prioritising children’s play brings proven benefits to children, families and communities, both immediately and in the long term. We make 15 calls, focusing on:

  • strategic leadership
  • play in schools
  • play in times of uncertainty
  • playful neighbourhoods.

The manifesto has been shared with the major political parties in Wales – we hope it has been useful when developing their own priorities and agenda for Wales.
