The Welsh Government Minister for Children and Social Care, Dawn Bowden MS has presented the first Ministerial Review of Play Progress Report. The report outlines the progress made so far and actions the Welsh Government will take forward from now up to May 2026 to achieve the Ministerial Review of Play Steering Group anticipated outcomes.

In a written statement, the Minister said that 48 short, medium and long-term actions had been completed out of the 67 highlighted in the Welsh Government’s response to the Ministerial Review of Play Steering Group recommendations. The report outlines progress against the 19 remaining medium and long-term actions and how each one will be taken forward.

In the statement, the Minister said:

‘We will continue to work with local authorities to support our ambitions in improving the availability of play opportunities and improving the quality of play spaces, creating inclusive and accessible play spaces.

‘I express my thanks to Play Wales, the local authorities and other key stakeholders for their ongoing support for children’s play, supporting our ambitions for Wales being a play friendly country becoming a reality.’

The Ministerial Review of Play Progress Report sets out the Welsh Government’s next steps, which include publishing the refreshed version of the Statutory Guidance, Wales – a Play Friendly Country later this month.

The Welsh Government will also work with Play Wales to support the analysis of Play Sufficiency Assessments and action plans which are to be submitted by local authorities by 30 June 2025.
