Children in Wales has launched a new pledge for babies aimed at supporting their unique rights and needs.
Here I am! – A pledge for babies in Wales has been developed to highlight the perspective of the baby, focusing on the first 1000 days of their lives.
Informed by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), the pledge calls on individuals and organisations involved in the lives of babies to commit to acknowledging their distinct needs in decisions that affect them.
The pledge was announced at the Children’s Rights in Early Years Network (CREYN) conference, following a collaborative project between Children in Wales and Swansea University. It was co-produced with input from parents, carers and their babies, professionals and members of the CREYN network – including Play Wales.
Play Wales says:
‘As a member of the Children’s Rights in Early Years Network, Play Wales welcomes the publication of “Here I am – a pledge for babies in Wales”. Playing, learning and wellbeing are inseparable during the first 1000 days. From those earliest days, children’s development and happiness can be strengthened by having access to plenty of opportunities to play, supported by playful adults and caregivers.’
