The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Lynne Neagle, has announced plans to set up a new national body for youth work in Wales.

The aim of the new organisation will be to unify and strengthen the youth work sector – which comprises 900 organisations across the maintained and voluntary sectors involved in the delivery of youth work. It will support innovation and collaboration and ensure its long-term sustainability.

An advisory group, including young people and representatives from across the youth work sector and beyond, will be established to look in detail at the role and remit the national body, its governance structures and its alignment to other organisations.

Announcing the plans during Youth Work Week (23 to 30 June), Lynne Neagle said:

‘This exciting new organisation will make sure that the many talented young people, youth workers, and organisations in the youth work sector in Wales have the structure, leadership, and advocacy they need to thrive.’

Play Wales says:

‘We welcome the announcement of the decision to establish a new national body, and statutory framework, for youth work. We believe that this development will support increased collaboration between the play and youth work sector and contribute to a greater alignment of youth work and play policy.’
