Hospital play

Author: Play Wales
Date: September 2015

This information sheet is aimed at playworkers and is also useful for anyone with a responsibility for providing children with opportunities to play.

It describes the role of the health play specialist in supporting a play process that helps sick children adapt to a health care setting. It shows how play can help sick children participate more in the care they receive.

The information sheet explores the different types of play that can support children and their families in developing a better understanding of their illness and treatment. It also explains why it’s important to provide children in hospital – and other health care settings such as children’s hospices – with spaces and opportunities for play.
