Explore Play Wales
From 17 September 2023, most 30mph speed limits on residential streets across Wales will change to 20mph.
The lower speed limit aims to make streets safer for playing, walking and cycling, as well as improve quality of life and encourage more people to make sustainable and active travel choices. The Welsh Government estimates that over the first decade, the change will save up to 100 lives and avoid up to 20,000 people being injured in traffic collisions.
The 20mph limit was initially trialled in eight communities across Wales in 2021, and legally approved by the Welsh Senedd in July 2022. The national rollout will make Wales the first UK nation to reduce the default speed limit on restricted residential roads and busy pedestrian streets.
