The Welsh Government has issued guidance to support schools to implement a Community Focused Schools approach.
The Welsh Government’s commitment to developing Community Focused Schools is a key part of its policy for tackling the impact of poverty on young people’s educational attainment. It reflects the announcements made by the Minister for Education and Welsh Language in March and June 2022.
The development of Community Focused Schools supports a broad range of other policy areas, including promoting children’s right to play by opening school grounds for outdoor play beyond school hours. The Welsh Government has produced an Annex to the guidance that clarifies this link.
The guidance presents a collaborative model for schools to develop a Community Focused Schools approach by engaging with families, the local community and other key service providers, for example, play providers.
This is the first in a suite of guidance planned to support schools.
