The Welsh Government has commissioned M·E·L Research to undertake qualitative research exploring the experiences of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnicity people working in the childcare and playwork sector in Wales. The goal of the research is to help shape the sector in a way that both meets the needs of all children in Wales and provides a welcoming and supportive environment for all its workers.

The research is part of the Welsh Government’s Anti-racist Wales Action Plan (ArWAP).

The plan aims to make a measurable difference to the lives of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people, and recognises their underrepresentation in a number of sectors, including the childcare and playwork sector.

The researchers are keen to speak to Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people who are either working in, or considering working in, the sector to understand their experiences, including their opinions of their work environment and any challenges they may face.Participation involves:

  • a 45-minute conversation (remote or in person) with one of the researchers, conducted at a time suitable to the participant, in either Welsh or English
  • a short three-day online community activity where participants can share further thoughts in writing, audio, video or pictures (10-20 minutes per day).

M·E·L Research is offering each participant a £70 shopping voucher as a thank you. All participation is voluntary and confidential.

For more information and to take part, please contact M·E·L Research by 30 November 2025.
